Mean Ol’ Captain Lou 5/15/2006
Jacinta Whitcome
(1) He had a haircut like the Gerber baby, fingers like sausages
(4)He walked down the street like Napoleon with fervor, determination
(1)With his seafaring boots, Patriots’ hat
(1)his thick chiseled arms that could lay you out flat He’d sling the
(5)ores over his shoulder and say
(4) “Well kid, it’s time to
(5) go waste another
(1)day.”
(1) He knew every knot that had been tied since man began tying knots
(4) Watch out for the dragon bowline, he only need trick you with it one time
(1) If it weren’t for his wily, vicious disposition throwing crabs and fish in my face
(5) I wouldn’t be calling him the mean ol’,
(4) Obsessive-compulsive,
(5) abominable, cold
(1)Captain Lou
(4) I say, “captain my captain, what we gonna do?
Got only (1) 10 roaches in the barrel and the day is half through,
things better (4) shape up or we should ship out, luck better change, too.
I’d work all (5) day and night for you
You (4) mean ol’ captain (1) Lou
(1) Here come Teddy Mahoney and the “howler”
Steaming up on our port side
(4) They act like they ain’t never
seen a woman on a boat before, they be drewlin’ wide-eyed
(1)we be goin’ about our business
(1)pullin’ up traps looking for a prize
(5)The “howler” woops up a ridiculous yelp
(4)And Teddy smirks with his
(5) eyes
(1)
(1) Now here comes “Frenchy” in his black Nova Scotia boat
(4) He say’s “hey, Loueeee, you got a new wife?”
(1)Louie says, “yah, I traded in the old one
(1)for a newer model, this one
(5) does more work and you know,
(4) suits me just
(1)fine.”
I say, “Captain, my captain, looks like we’re stirring the pot.”
Louie throws a devilish look over his shoulder and says,
“You know I like it HOT”
I say, “I guess, we’ll just have our own legacy…
the great Captain Lou and the “girl” on the sea.”
(1)Last trawl of the day, Coldplay resounding from the radio
(4)Sun is hanging high, ocean reflecting its glow
(1)Feel a cool breeze,
(1)and ocean-spray on my face, watching a
(5)gang of dolphins, create a
(4)circus of fun from our
(5)wake
(1)
(1)Take the days catch to D’Mari’s Wholesale, price dropped to $0.75 per
(4)Louie wants a new boat but this sure won’t get him there
(1)Ain’t this always how it works,
(1) they bring the workin’ man down
(5)they sit up in there offices, and think up the
(4)lowest price they can
(5)put on a pound
(1)
I say, “Captain, my captain, you know you don’t have to pay me,
I feel so much more alive out here, you know, I’d just work for free
He said that’s nice kid, that’s nice but you better listen to me
Nothing, nothing, nothing I said nothing is for free
I say, “Captain, my captain, what we gonna do?
Got only thirty roaches in the barrel, and now the day is through.
Things better shape up or we should ship out, or just hope our luck changes soon
I’d work all day and night for you
You mean ol’ captain Lou.
